This paper looks at how staff on neonatal intensive care units manage the parents of sick infants. The information given to parents is manipulated in order to obtain parental behaviors needed by the staff to do their work. The parental role desired by the staff facilitates quick application of medical treatment to the infants with parental consent. I conclude that parents take responsibility for decisions they do not fully understand and, like clients in all professional relationships, rely on the advice of the experts
