Sociology, has at least three possible political functions or consequences: 1) control—to maintain the status quo; 2) unmasking—to reveal how the status quo is maintained; and 3) liberation—to help change the status quo for the better.... A sociology of liberation must give us ideas about how to get to the future as well as ideas of what it might look like.
