Formulation of a general theory of interaction is today, as it has always been, the central task of sociology. Precisely because interaction is so central to all the behavioral sciences, direct formulation of its theoretical basis has proved most difficult. This seminal concept leads inexorably to consideration of the broadest panorama of social, cultural, and psychological problems. Explanation of a particulaf interaction pattern may require attention to the personality of individual actors, to the cultural matrix which forms the situation for those actors, and to the wider social system of which that patternn is part. This is true in spite of the fact that a theory of interaction can appeal ultimately neither to the idiosyncratic nor the cultural, but must consist of a self-contained set of related propositions
