The process of doing fieldwork - observing, interviewing and applying data-gathering instruments firsthand - is of obvious importance at some stage of nearly all social scientific endeavors. Our understanding of just what constitutes or contributes to this process is, however, limited. In this note I wish to offer one scheme which seems to hold some promise for increasing our understanding of the research process in the field - a scheme in which the relationship between researcher and informant is viewed as a transaction or exchange
