A field researcher faces complex issues in establishing and maintaining contact with the people he studies. In the sizeable literature dealing with the problems of participant-observer roles and researcher-client relationships which has developed over the years, a number of themes can be detected. One broad subject has to do with understanding the dynamics of client-researcher roles and finding ways to utilize this knowledge to obtain more valid data. Another theme has been the comparison of different research approaches to field work. One of the most recent works in this line is that of Bruyn who has analyzed the unique contributions of participant-observer methods when compared to traditional empiricism
