Examples of failed development projects in the West African Sahel are legion; this paper reports on successes. A multidisciplinary team identified scores of successful natural resources management initiatives ranging from farmer innovations to national policies in The Gambia, Mali, Niger, and Senegal. Rapid reconnaissance technique adapted from farming systems research methods was employed in the survey effort. Analysis of the case studies, four of which are presented here, leads to the formulation of strategic recommendations for long-term collaborative natural resource research and development in the Sahel. The cases also suggest a number of hypotheses for further intra-regional comparative research in cultural ecology
