The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of social class on the careers and vocational choices of male students at an elite college. Freshmen and seniors whose family backgrounds could be classified as working-class were compared with those who were classified as upper middle-class. We hypothesized the latter group to be representative of the institution's norms. The results were consistent in showing no differences between the working-class and upper middle-class students in terms of major subject, grades, plans for further education, career plans, and anticipated satisfaction with various careers. Our results are discussed in terms of institutional selection of a select group of presocialized working-class students and the impact of youth culture and academic culture
