Anderson's “Reactions to a Study of Bureaucracy and Alienation” appear to be based on (1) only one of several acceptable conceptualizations of alienation, (2) a macro- as opposed to micro-sociological orientation, and (3) the notion that statistical techniques should influence conceptualization. These issues and others are discussed and, for the most part, are found to be inappropriate for our research problem and data. The alternative design suggested by Anderson may have some merits as well as pose some problems should it be applied to an appropriate data set
