This article critiques the use of componential analysis and other formal methods for describing and comparing cultures, arguing that they often misrepresent cultural knowledge and practice. Jorion and Goodenough contend that cultural descriptions should focus on the practical skills and knowledge individuals possess and how they use them in everyday life. They propose an alternative approach based on the concept of "operative description," which emphasizes the observation and recording of actual behavior and its context, rather than abstracting underlying rules or structures. This approach prioritizes understanding how individuals learn, apply, and transmit cultural knowledge, emphasizing the dynamic and situated nature of culture
