Links between city and countryside in the construction of Catalan national identity are explored through a systematic and contextualized unpacking ofan image that appeared in two pivotal election campaigns. Francesc Macia, the central figure of Catalonia's return to self-government under the Second Republic, offered the voters of 1931 a modelfor a Catalan nation based on the values of a free peasantry and ruralfamily structures. By 1980 that election had itself become symbolic. The resuscitation of Macia's homely image of rural life allowed the party that used it not only to evoke the past but to claim it and to assert its legitimacy on historical grounds against the rival claims of popular parties whose nationalist credentials were in some doubt [Catalonia, nationalism, history, imagery, political discourse]
