This article critiques the transversal approach commonly used in social mobility studies. Bertaux argues that this approach, which relies on snapshot surveys of individuals' current social positions and their fathers' occupations, fails to capture the dynamic and complex nature of social trajectories. He proposes a biographical approach as an alternative, emphasizing the importance of examining individual life histories and the various factors that influence social mobility over time. This approach allows for a more nuanced understanding of the processes and mechanisms underlying social mobility, including the role of education, career choices, family background, and historical context. Bertaux illustrates his argument with examples from French society, highlighting the limitations of the transversal approach and the potential of the biographical approach to provide a more comprehensive and accurate picture of social mobility
