The objective of this study is to examine married couples' perceptions of equity/ inequity in the performance of selected marital roles at four stages of the family life cycle. A randomly selected sample of 336 couples was interviewed and asked their perception of thefairness of their own and of their spouses' efforts in the family roles of cooking, housekeeping, provider, companion, and parent. Perceived equity in family roles tended to increase over the life cycle for both husbands and wives while perceived inequity decreased. However, wives were more likely than husbands to perceive inequity that was unfavorable to them in three of the roles, whereas husbands were more likely than wives to perceive equity that was favorable to them in all the family roles
