Dans les pays d'Europe de l'Est, notamment en Pologne et en Ukraine, les musiciens ( « muzykanty ») etaient des fermiers qui obtenaient ainsi un revenu supplementaire. S'ils n'etaient pas toujours bien consideres, ils se devaient cependant de jouer gratuitement lors des ceremonies de mariage car il s'agissait de leurs obligations (patronage musical). Les groupes de musiciens etaient le plus souvent composes des membres d'une meme famille. Mais a la fin du 19 e siecle et au debut du 20 e , des changements apparurent : un contrat s'etablit entre l'acheteur et le vendeur de services et le fermier-musicien devint un entrepreneur
