Suite au processus d'industrialisation et d'urbanisation des annees 1960-1970, l'espace social des communautes musulmanes de Singapour, a subi une reorganisation en profondeur. L'homogeneite culturelle traditionnelle autour de l'espace sonore cree par la diffusion de la priere depuis le minaret a ete remise en cause, laissant la place a un environnement social fragmente et heterogene, integrant des communautes culturelles et ethniques differentes. Afin de maintenir la cohesion de la communaute, l'utilisation des technologies modernes (radio et haut-parleur) pour la diffusion de la priere, l'adhan, a en meme temps permis de maintenir la cohesion communautaire et cree des conflits dans l'organisation et l'utilisation de l'espace acoustique urbain. A travers l'analyse de ce processus, l'A. examine les relations entre la technologie et l'organisation spatiale de la vie sociale. Il soutient que les medias modernes peuvent etre intimement associes a l'expression traditionnelle d'une culture populaire, en l'occurrence l'institution religieuse de l'Islam. A Singapour, la traditionalisation des medias permet de leur assigner une signification sociale specifique et de produire et d'affirmer l'identite religieuse et culturelle
