This article proposes a rigorous sociology of law that distinguishes itself from traditional legal science by taking the latter as its object of study. It avoids the pitfalls of both formalism, which asserts the absolute autonomy of legal form from the social world, and instrumentalism, which views law as a mere reflection or tool serving the dominant class. Instead, it highlights what these two opposing views, internalist and externalist, have in common: they ignore the existence of a relatively autonomous social universe within which legal authority is produced and exercised. This legal authority is the quintessential form of legitimate symbolic violence, the monopoly of which belongs to the State. The practical content of the law, revealed in verdicts, is the outcome of a symbolic struggle between professionals with unequal competencies. The constitution of specifically legal competence (inseparably technical and social) leads to the disqualification of the non-specialists' sense of fairness. This gap between the common understanding of the litigant, i.e., the client, and the expert view of the judge, lawyer, legal advisor, etc., constitutes a monopoly. It results from the very structure and functioning of the field, which imposes a system of specific requirements, the core of which is the adoption of a global posture, notably visible in the use of language. Law is arguably the quintessential form of symbolic power of naming and classifying, creating the things named, and in particular, groups. It is not an exaggeration to say that it makes the social world, but only if we do not forget that it is made by it
