This work is a review of Oliveira Vianna's book *Evolução do Povo Brasileiro*. Willems critiques Vianna's deterministic approach to Brazilian social evolution, arguing that it oversimplifies the complex interplay of historical, cultural, and environmental factors. He challenges Vianna's reliance on racial and environmental determinism to explain Brazilian national character and social development. While acknowledging Vianna's contributions to Brazilian sociology, Willems points out the limitations of his framework and suggests alternative perspectives for understanding Brazilian society
