Resumo

This article contributes to the growing body of work that explores the performativity of economics, by focusing on processes of economization. Economization is defined as the organization of actions, objects, and subjects in relation to calculations. The article draws on the work of Michel Callon to develop a framework for understanding economization as a process of qualification, and applies this framework to the case of the creation of carbon markets. The article argues that economization is not a neutral or technical process, but is always shaped by power relations and political struggles. It concludes by suggesting that a focus on economization can help to open up new avenues for critical engagement with the economy.
