CONTRARY TO POPULAR OPINION, not all graffiti are dirty, humorous, or erotic. Although the majority of serious studies have dealt with the psychological and sociological analysis of the category of graffiti which Alan Dundes calls latrinalia,I and, although the popular press has a long history of feature articles on the topic,2 little investigation has been undertaken to determine the nature and importance of other types of public-wall writing in the United States.3 This paper deals with a distinctive type of such non-scatalogical graffiti
