HISTORIANS OF GERMAN FOLKLORE have begun to examine carefully the role that this science played during the period of National Socialism. Adolf Bach includes a detailed chapter on Die deutsche Volkskunde 1933/45 in the third edition of his monumental study Deutsche Volkskunde (1960), and Hermann Bausinger (1965) analyzes these dark years of German folklore scholarship in his significant article on Volksideologie und Volksforschung: Zur nationalsozialistischen Volkskunde. There is also Christa Kamenetsky's study of as a Political Tool in Nazi (1972),1 which summarizes the manipulation of folklore studies in Germany for the English reader. The three surveys explain that the study of folklore, just like everything else, was subjected to the misconceived racial theories of National Socialism. Folklore was not to be considered an international and objective science any longer, but rather a means to an end, namely, the proof of racial supremacy of the Aryans. Folklore became politicized, and the guiding principles were the chauvinistic and anti-Semitic policies which governed Germany during this time. Obviously, not every German folklorist participated in this scholarly perversion, but the ones who did were published extensively. The titles of these publications alone bear witness to the Gleichschaltung (political coordination) of folklore and National Socialism
