The connection between the ideas of the Saint-Simonians and the spectacular growth and development of investment banking in mid-19th century Europe is documented. Some of the economic ideas of the Saint-Simonians are outlined, and it is shown that they looked forward to a worldwide economic association managed by a mammoth bank. The investigation then focuses on the economic activity of two prominent Saint-Simonians-Emile and Isaac Pereire. The economic activities of the Pereires are traced from their entrepreneurial interest in railroads to the founding of the Credit Mobilier, activities which had a measurable influence on the economic development of Europe
