T Wo RECENT EVENTS are forceful reminders China is the only country in the world has experienced two revolutions this century. first is the sustained campaign by the present leaders in the People's Republic of China to convince everyone the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (GPCR) of 1966-76 was gross mistake. second is the publication of series of articles in China in 1978-79, identifying the Tienanmen Incident of April 5, 1976 with what had happened-also in Peking-on May 4, 1919. These writings achieved new significance in May 1979 with the appearance of number of thoughtful essays in China (and also in Taiwan and Hong Kong) published to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the May Fourth Movement, an event which has been called China's first revolution. By this time, it came as no surprise to find the following statements: The April Fifth Movement is the same as the May Fourth Movement, not only mass political movement, but at the same time also culture and thought movement; The April Fifth Movement carries forward and develops the scientific and democratic spirit of the May Fourth Movement.' China seems once again to be appealing to the old remedy: modernisation through revolution. There are no agreed definitions of cultural revolution even among the Chinese themselves.
