This article assesses the relationship between music and media in France through a focus on music journalism and promotion. It considers the activities of individuals who were vital to the promotion of punk during the middle 1970s. By presenting punk as a radically new culture able to renew the rock music scene in France, these promoters confronted central aspects of the relationship between music and media. Their shaping of debates on the origins of punk clarifies the role of media in disseminating international musical forms in the French setting. Their embracing of punk as radically new sheds light on how established media outlets (Rock & Folk magazine, Libération newspaper) responded to phenomena that challenged cherished foundational principles. Finally, their close identification with the new allowed these promoters to advance their own interests, revealing the "rules of the game" that pertained in media outlets devoted to the coverage of music. Ultimately their activities established the paradigm of the participant observer as optimum for the music journalist, with important ramifications for the subsequent relationship between music and media in France
