The opium poppy, Papaver somniferum L., constitutes one of the most widely exploited psychoactive substances in human history. Hitherto, the investigation of the antiquity of the opium poppy's use by humans for narcotic purposes has predominantly relied on implicit archaeological data that suggests, but does not demonstrate such a use. Procedures of the controlled creation, artificial aging, and the molecular characterization by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry of opium residues are presented. Experimental results and implications are also discussed
