The relationship between Tahitian peasant women's economic subordination and the rural penetration of capitalist relations of production is examined. Patterns of transformation in the sexual division of labor, the organization of domestic production, and in male/female control over resources and products are analyzed. Using the cases of copra and vanilla production, I show how men have achieved control over the means of production and that this control is linked to patterns of male domination and authority in the Neo-Tahitian commodity-producing household
