In the late 19th century, world fairs were a showcase for emerging nations. The ruling Argentine elites sought to portray Argentina as modern and having a European profile. Argentine's participation in the 1904 Saint Louis World's Fair (United States) condenses the laissez-faire of the Argentine state into issues of the pre-Hispanic past and ethnographic present that converge to present a country where the future would detach from the ethnographic present and vestiges of the pre-Hispanic past were rendered part of natural history. Laissez-faire is reflected in two transferred "othernesses." First, a group of Tehuelche people participated in the fair's Anthropology Department exhibitions, transforming themselves from subjects to objects of mass consumption. Second, a collector named Zavaleta brought archaeological objects that would become part of the pantheon of Andean civilizations. This article analyzes the presence of these othernesses and how their exhibition helped position them within the political discourse of the Argentine nation
