The paper analyzes modern dance in phenomenological and semiotic aspects, the dance being \nthe result of merging of modernism traditions and technological innovations of postmodernism. It \nsystematizes comparative materials, concerning the modern dance phenomenon, attempts to unify \ndefinitions, characterizing this phenomenon, provides a self-dependent analysis of the specificity of \nchoreographic means of expression peculiar for “Chunky Move”, an Australian dance group. This \ngroup’s creative work has not been described in the Russian art history. The author comes to the \nconclusion that modern dance was born as a logical continuation of the modernist style dance and \nincorporates the elements of dance cultures from different historic periods. In search of new artistic \nforms, the dance uses modern art-technologies that turn a descriptive and expressive potential of \ncontemporary dance into a limitless one
