In the last decade two major developments have taken place in the comparative study of social movements. First, the social-integration perspective has been challenged by the growth of the resource-mobilization paradigm. These opposing perspectives make different assumptions about the rationality of the motives of social-movement participants and assign different weights to institutional structures and group interests in promoting social movements.
