This paper considers the economics of a strategy (termed "extending") of adult recruitment to households in societies with limited capital investment possibilities and abundant land. Using data from riveraine, northwest Barma of Chad, it is shown that the extending strategy can regulate dependency ratio forming households with greater productive capacity, due to larger labor forces, and hence the potential for superior economic performance. Extended family household composition is described as a concomitant of application of extending strategies
