As part of a larger research project on the relationship of family functioning to neighborhood and ethnic factors, the present study examined effects of a series of environmental variables on the sexual functioning of family heads. The study group was comprised of randomly selected samples of young and mid-career families in two neighborhoods in Melbourne, Australia. The present research revealed that only the most proximate influences, the family's social functioning and egalitarian ethicbut not its ethnic or social class backgroundhad an effect on spouses' pattern of sexual communication. The implications for intervention are briefly considered
