When I was asked to comment on the illustration printed on the cover of the first (1961) volume of the journal L’Homme, I was honored to have my name associated with the inimitable Claude Lévi-Strauss, the founder of structuralist anthropology, which was nurtured by the tropical forests of Brazil and nourished by the exceptionally diverse ethnic groups whose forebears had lived there for millennia.
