O regime democrático contribui para o crescimento econômico? Ou ainda, a durabilidade das instituições políticas favorece o crescimento econômico? Objetivando responder essas questões e contribuir com a pesquisa empírica acerca da relação entre instituições formais e crescimento da economia, o presente artigo analisou dados da América Latina no período 2004-2013, em estrutura de painel dinâmico, buscando evidências de uma relação de causalidade entre instituições políticas e expansão da riqueza agregada. Para os testes empíricos das hipóteses de trabalho, recorreu-se ao Método dos Momentos Generalizados (GMM), usando estimadores Arellano-Bond. Observou-se que o efeito positivo sobre o crescimento do PIB não decorre da natureza do regime, mas da estabilidade das instituições formais de regulação da distribuição de poder político nos países do continente
