SWEDISH COMPOSERS ARE LARGELY ABSENT from musicological studies of the early twentieth century. Without a single figurehead like Carl Nielsen or Jean Sibelius, Sweden's musical climate in this period has remained relatively underexplored. Key personalities such as Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871^1927) have yet to receive the scholarly attention recently enjoyed by their Nordic colleagues. 1 Consequently little is known about Swedish musical modernism, despite the extensive exchange of ideas between Sweden and the rest of Europe.
