Under most circumstances, the volume of hiring at any given time involves only a fractional addition to the plant work force and the criteria for selection and placement are usually well established. Hiring an entire force of substantial size and in the absence of empirically tested criteria for selection and placement presents a problem of greater magnitude and complexity, particularly when the jobs require a high order of skill. This article describes the experience of a machinery manufacturer with just such a problem and suggests that successful selection and placement may be accomplished at minimum cost by careful use of aptitude tests.
