ARLY in i 646, Samuel, youngest son of John Winthrop, wrote two letters Tenerife in Canary Islands to his father back in Boston. The two letters are filled with anxiety of a nineteenyear-old living in a time of economic, political, and religious confusion. Hoping to persuade his father to let him take a job as a merchant's clerk on Tenerife, Samuel shared his deepest concerns. He worried that God had yet to reveal to him evidence of spiritual rebirth; he remained deprived of precious means of grace. He anguished over his lack of a fixed calling, his not knowing what profession I should embrace. He had intended to accompany his brother Stephen to London and begin a mercantile career but now concluded that the unsettled condition of things in our fatherland made it impossible to tell what to enter upon and what to avoid. Samuel agonized over his separation his family; circumstances and God's will had distanced him from kindred and father's house.' These three concerns-God, fortune, and family-remained central for Samuel Winthrop throughout his life. Winthrop's life course led Boston to Canaries, Azores, Europe, and finally Leeward Islands in West Indies, where he spent his last twenty-five years. To his fierce disappointment, he discovered that
