  • ‘To Procure Negroes’: The English Slave Trade to Barbados, 1627-60

    Larry Gragg•CHAPTER•Atlantic Slave Trade•2022

In August 1645, George Downing, a twenty-two-year-old chaplain aboard an English vessel, wrote a letter to his cousin John Winthrop, Jr. about his five-month voyage to the West Indies. In early 1644, Pennoyer obtained a 60 acre plantation from Charles Stobart, along with the servants to work the fields. Beyond obtaining slaves both to sell in the lucrative Barbados labour market and to work his sugar fields, Pennoyer, an absentee planter, was a f…

  • Stigma Cities: The Reputation and History of Birmingham, San Francisco, and Las Vegas. By Jonathan Foster

    Open Access•Larry Gragg•ARTICLE•Western Historical Quarterly•2020

Stigma Cities is an intriguing book. Jonathan Foster, a professor of history at Great Basin College in Elko, Nevada, seeks to understand how “the stigmatization of a place for being abnormal or even deviant often creates a reputation-based identity that can be impactful and long lived” (p. 3). Foster is personally familiar with two of the locales. He grew up in Birmingham, and he earned his Ph.D. in history at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.…

  • Switching Sides: How a Generation of Historians Lost Sympathy for the Victims of the Salem Witch Hunt

    Open Access•Larry Gragg•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2019

Since the 1690s, a multitude of analysts have offered explanations of the witch crisis in Massachusetts. Contemporaries sought to understand the role of Satan in the accusations, but with their passing, subsequent commentators assigned blame to human agents. Thomas Hutchinson in the eighteenth century, Charles Upham in the nineteenth century, and Marion Starkey in the twentieth century saw the accusing girls of Salem as the key to understanding w…

  • Chapter One. Introduction

    Larry Gragg•CHAPTER•Englishmen transplanted•2003

This introductory chapter places this study in the context of previous work done by historians on early Barbados. Because the argument of the book is focused on how settlers on Barbados sought to transplant their culture to a tropical setting, it also examines the nature of what it meant to be English in the early 17th century. Several traits in England — geographic mobility, a concern with disorder, anti-Catholicism, faith in the common law, and…

  • Chapter Three. Establishing a Colony, 1625–1660

    Larry Gragg•CHAPTER•Englishmen transplanted•2003

This chapter provides a chronological account of the development of the colony to the Restoration of Charles II. Discord dominated the colony's earliest years. Conflicting proprietary patents triggered a struggle between a merchant and a courtier, both of whom sent governors and shiploads of settlers and supplies to the island. Through the 1630s, surviving governors ruled with an iron hand. Two developments in the 1640s, however, permitted the pl…

  • 'Englishmen Transplanted': The English Colonization of Barbados 1627-1660

Larry Gragg, Larry Dale Gragg•BOOK•Englishmen transplanted•2003

Larry Gragg challenges the prevailing view of the seventeenth-century English planters of Barbados as architects of a social disaster. Most historians have described them as profligate and immoral, as grasping capitalists who exploited their servants and slaves in a quest for quick riches in the cultivation of sugar. Yet, they were more than rapacious entrepreneurs. Like English emigrants to other regions in the empire, sugar planters transplante…

Larry Gragg, Larry D Gragg•ARTICLE•The William and Mary Quarterly•1993

ARLY in i 646, Samuel, youngest son of John Winthrop, wrote two letters Tenerife in Canary Islands to his father back in Boston. The two letters are filled with anxiety of a nineteenyear-old living in a time of economic, political, and religious confusion.
