The main aim of this thesis is to explore how the parental blessing, which Jacob obtained through deception, can still be efficacious despite its controversial transmission. \nBefore we tum to the central analysis, in Chapter One we provide an overview of blessing in the book of Genesis in order to show its significance and to demarcate the area which our study focuses on. This chapter also provides the definition of the term "efficacy" and outlines the purpose and plan of our study. \nChapter Two establishes a background for our study by reviewing certain works, such as those of Pedersen, Westermann, Scharbert, and Mitchell, on blessing in the OT. It contends that the concept of the efficacy of parental blessing has been subject to misunderstanding on the one hand and an inadequate explanation on the other, mainly because these scholars relied too heavily on pre-textual or extra-textual social, cultural and religious practices to address this problem. \nIn Chapters Three and Five we engage in the contextual analysis, namely, we interpret Gen 25:1-26:35 and 28:10-33:20 to hear how these texts address the nature and efficacy of blessing in their own right and then to establish how they contribute to the understanding of parental blessing and its effectiveness. \nChapter Four provides an extensive narrative analysis for Gen 27:1-28:9 in order.to understand how the text portrays the efficacy of parental blessing. Our discussion will result in the proposal that the efficacy of parental blessing hinges on the interaction between an inexplicable divine plan intended to bless the patriarchs and their descendants and the characters' actions intended to accomplish their interests. We shall see that ultimately it is due to God's favourable attitude towards Jacob and his descendants that the blessing works for them in complex ways
