This paper looks at the influence of the sociology of education on the implementation of priority education policies. This diffuse influence, which takes place outside the system, led to choose since 1981 a policy of positive discrimination “from the bottom”, which objective is to take up the challenge of the democratisation of long education by fighting against early school failure. The comparison between the corpuses of official texts produced in the early eighties and the early 2000s emphasizes the growing gap between the initial problem and the solutions preferred today. As a result of this gap, a distinction is now being made between academic success and academic excellence
