Thirty years ago, the department of management and economics at University Paris VIII (North of Paris) was an economics department which produced critical theories of capitalism. Over the last years it has turned into a department of management. It thus constitutes a site for the study of how practice-based knowledge was legitimated within the French academic field. The article shows how curricula evolved and highlights the part played by teachers and students alike in that process. The work is supported by a morphological analysis of the student population in relation to their academic and professional perspectives, as well as the representations the lecturers hold with regards to the student population, and employment. It is thus possible to shed light on some of the effects the student recruitment had on the academic imposition of knowledge suited to business needs
