This article aims to analyze local changes in the model of skills acquisition within the neozapatista movement during the last fifteen years in Chiapas. It helps to understand how regional autonomy political practices led active indigenous people to regain control of schooling by taking full control of educational matters. In territories under Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) influence in Southeastern Mexico, the strategies of alphabetization by educators (appointed and accountable to the local assembly) draw on the educational principles of Popular Education. But to some extent these approaches also reflect the dominant educational culture that the Zapatistas are opposing and resisting every day
