This article has two aims : (1) to reveal the existence of different conceptions of the semantics of the prototype. On the one hand we show the definitory slidings with in the standard version of the prototype ; on the other hand, we describe, thanks to the notion of family resemblance, the passage to an extended version of the prototype. (2) to show the principal advantages and disadvantages of this new conception of lexical meaning. We show in particular that, in spite of its aims, this conception does not present a definitive solution to the problem of categorization
