En examinant en particulier Bever (stratégies comme description de la performance) , Bresnan (grammaire "réaliste") , Chomsky et Winograd (comme représentant de la recherche linguistique soutenue par ordinateurs) , l'auteur cherche à comprendre ce que l'on entend par "linguistique comme science cognitive" .
