A brief discussion of the use of the shell trumpet in various prehistoric cultures, with emphasis on skeuomorphs of stone (Crete) and pottery (Central and South America). Illustrated with X‐ray photographs of two pottery conches from Mochica and two vessel whistles in shell form from Colombia. One appendix raises some problems due to the lack of shell trumpets in some areas and a second discusses what little is known about the acoustical behaviour of the conch
