This paper discusses aspects of the use of land and freshwater Mollusca in establishing a chronological framework for archaeological deposits. Certain topics will be considered which, while of more theoretical than practical application, will, it is hoped, clarify the background to the use of Mollusca in chronological work. Moreover, as only a limited number of detailed investigations have been made, it is not possible to do more than make one or two general observations and suggest lines for future development of the subject. In case this may sound a despondent note, however, it is clear from work which has been done that the value of molluscan analysis is equivalent to that already established through the use of pollen
