T raditional sources have long suggested that women in early modern Rus' played a much lesser role and were held in significantly lower esteem than their counterparts in Western Europe. Old Russian literary sources put emphasis on the evil woman theme.1 Formal legal codices gave women relatively little attention.2 Western travelers to Muscovy reported that Russian women were considerably worse off and existed in a state of misery.3 According to the standard view, their role declined from the fifteenth century on, and became severely restricted in the sixteenth century.4
