A major issue in the geographies of Islamophobia is the place granted to Muslims in cities in which they are a minority, and one way of understanding this place, in terms that are not purely metaphorical, is by looking at the provision made for places for Muslims to pray. This paper aims to look beyond the framework of 'mosque conflicts' and consider forms of 'accommodation' at the local, municipal level, that demonstrate less frontal hostility to Muslims, yet sometimes mingle acceptance and celebration of their presence with discourses emphasizing the need to control and domesticate them that can be read as benign Islamophobia. The focus on neighbourhood space also allows for a consideration of the entanglement of gender issues with local management of Islam in Paris. A case of relatively unproblematic local accommodation, in Créteil, is contrasted with a far more complex situation in the Goutte d'Or to tease out the effects of Islam being dealt with as 'culture' rather than religion
