T has long been recognized by students of urban phenomena that the broad spatial arrangement of urban land uses is in large measure a function of movement requirements of different land users. The reciprocal effect of land use pattern on the structure of urban movement has been articulated more recently' and investigated in some detail in many metropolitan transportation studies.2 These transportation studies have demonstrated that the location, intensity, and interaction of urban land uses govern the level of transportation demand and the pattern of intraurban traffic flows. Consequently, under their stimulus, a body of research and theory has recently emerged with the microspatial organization of urban land uses as its focus. Utilizing long-standing theory in the social sciences as well as pertinent experimentation, mathematical models that describe functional differentiation of land uses within urban areas have been developed recently. This paper is intended to report on one recent effort in this direction of land use model building. It describes the urban growth model developed in trans
