Studies of the educational aspirations of Negro parents and their children show some inconsistencies.' In part, these inconsistencies depend on differences between educational aspirations related to hopes and desires in contrast to those based on expectations. For example, Negro parents and children hope for and desire as high a level of educational attainment, and sometimes higher, as middle-class white parents and children. But when measures of level of educational attainment reflect expectations (instead of hopes, desires) the differences are more likely to favor whites.2
