Over the past several years there has been a concerted effort among many math and science educators to improve math and science education for minority students. Much of this effort has been aimed at developing new delivery mechanisms (i.e., Saturday or after-school programs and science academies) or enhancing the current school curriculum. In short, most of the current intervention in math and science education is active and takes place in a manner that leads to direct instructional improvement for students. However, such efforts only capture part of the math and science educational enterprise. While the growing attention given to cognitive research in education is reflective of the importance of research on the lives of school children, basic educational research in math and science education has not received the full attention of those concerned with the improvement of math and science education. Cognitive research has become increasingly more important to education. As Resnick (1984) indicated in a National Academy of Education report on research and education, the new challenges for education cannot be met with the methods of the past; rather, they demand new and continued efforts to know and understand, through research, the process of teaching and learning
