L'A. etudie le role des femmes dans la vie de Jean Chrysostome et dans la vie de l'Eglise de Constantinople entre 398 et 407. Il utilise les travaux de Clark, Liebeschuetz, Broc et Delmaire pour les informations trouvees dans les lettres, sermons et autres sources de Jean Chrysostome. Il presente tout d'abord ces femmes : Olympias, Eudoxia, Eugraphia, Castricia et Marsa qui appartiennent a la haute societe. A la fin du 4e siecle, les femmes riches ont permit au clerge d'entrer dans la vie politique de Constantinople et d'acceder a l'empereur. Les eveques, grâce a la richesse et a l'hospitalite de ces femmes, pouvaient se rendre dans la capitale et y rester le temps de presenter leur vue et d'influencer le peuple. Elles constituaient une ressource economique pour le clerge tout en leur permettant de rester independant
