Theological arguments framing violence against women: Context, cause and the gendered impacts of scriptural priorities
Exploring the Theological Context to Domestic and Family Violence
This article explores the theological drivers of domestic and family violence (DFV)—specifically intimate partner violence—by engaging with ecclesiastical beliefs and practices of the Lutheran Church of Australia (LCA). Key theological, policy, and public documents were analyzed to understand gender relations, gender roles, marriage, ordination, ethical behavior, and responses to DFV. Findings from the document analysis demonstrate church practic…

Exploring Christian Lutheran theological framings that shape men's perpetration of domestic violence through pastor perspectives
The inclusion of theological beliefs and practices in the analysis of domestic violence is needed, hence this paper explores how Christian theological framings shape men’s perpetration of domestic violence. Through engagement with the Lutheran Church of Australia, interviews and a survey with Pastors found that gender was dominant in the themes and provided a framework for how Pastors understood domestic violence and how they articulated their ex…
The Edited Collection and the Advancement of Late Antiquity
In this major review essay, two recent edited collections serve as a prompt to reflect more deeply on the contribution of edited collections as a whole to the advancement of knowledge in the field of Late Antiquity. The impact of the pressures brought to bear on the genre by publishers, employers, and funders in the current academic-capitalist environment is discussed. It is argued that the genre across the majority of its subcategories continues…
Religious Violence in Late Antiquity: Current Approaches, Trends and Issues
Late Antiquity, it has long been assumed, is the historical period in which we first observe the widespread rise of religious intolerance. 1 Hand in hand with this view goes the premise that there is a direct causal relationship between religious intolerance and religious violence. That is, intolerance leads to conflict; conflict leads to violence. 2 Late Antiquity, in which Constantine’s conversion to Christianity is viewed as a watershed moment…
Catecheses and Homilies
This chapter seeks to draw out the diverse ways in which biblical interpretation was expressed in early Christian preaching and catechetical instruction. Issues discussed include: current theories about the role played by biblical interpretation in the origin and early shaping of the homiletic/catechetical genres, and the fluidity of the boundary between catechetical lecture and homily. Preaching and teaching, it is argued, constituted a primary …
Revisioning John Chrysostom: New Approaches, New Perspectives
In Revisioning John Chrysostom, Chris de Wet and Wendy Mayer harness and promote a new wave of scholarship on the life and works of this famous late-antique (c. 350-407 CE) preacher. New theories from the cognitive and neurosciences, cultural and sleep studies, and history of the emotions, among others, meld with reconsideration of lapsed approaches – his debt to Graeco-Roman paideia, philosophy, and now medicine – resulting in sometimes surprisi…

Christians Shaping Identity from the Roman Empire to Byzantium: Studies Inspired by Pauline Allen
The essays collected in Christians Shaping Identity celebrate Pauline Allen’s significant contribution to early Christian, late antique, and Byzantine studies, especially concerning bishops, heresy/orthodoxy and christology. Covering the period from earliest Christianity to middle Byzantium, the first eighteen essays explore the varied ways in which Christians constructed their own identity and that of the society around them. A final four essays…
Religious Conflict from Early Christianity to the Rise of Islam
Conflict has been an inescapable facet of religion from its very beginnings. This volume offers insight into the mechanisms at play in the centuries from the Jesus-movement’s first attempts to define itself over and against Judaism to the beginnings of Islam. Profiling research by scholars of the Centre for Early Christian Studies at Australian Catholic University, the essays document inter- and intra-religious conflict from a variety of angles. …
John Chrysostom
There are two chief reasons why John Chrysostom (ca. 350‐407 CE ) is significant: the vast size and quality of his surviving works (more than one thousand letters, treatises, and sermons), and his role at the center of a schism that split the Christian world in the first decades of the fifth century.
Approaching Late Antiquity

Poverty and Society in the World of John Chrysostom
Like those of Basil and the two Gregories, the writings of John Chrysostom provide useful data about poverty that is difficult to recover from the archaeological record. In this article, images of the poor and information about poverty in his writings are grouped into five categories: basic information, voluntary poverty (asceticism), the sight and sound of poverty in the urban setting, individual social response, and self-consciousness about pov…
Trait and Social Processes in the Link Between Social Support and Affect: An Experimental, Laboratory Investigation
This study investigated the extent to which the link between perceived social support and affect reflected support recipients' trait perceived support as well as three distinct social processes: the objective supportiveness of providers, the unique relationships among recipients and providers that were stable over occasions, as well as the unique relationships that varied across occasions. Ten recipients interacted with each of the same four prov…

John Chrysostom as Bishop: The View from Antioch
The basic details of the portrayal by the sources of the episcopate of John Chrysostom have long been accepted in the literature. So also the perspective from which his episcopate is viewed, which is both Constantinopolitan and partisan. By examining what happened from another angle, namely from Antioch, it can be seen that the standard portrayal needs to be treated with caution. At the same time, an Antiochene perspective offers new insight into…

Chrysostom and the Preaching of Homilies in Series: A Re-Examination of the Fifteen Homilies in Epistulam ad Philippenses (CPG 4432)
